Pain Management Specialist Jobs in Illinois
A Pain Management Specialist is a medical professional who is part of the healthcare industry. Their primary role is to identify, diagnose, and treat different types of pain, including acute, chronic, and cancer pain in patients. They develop comprehensive, individualized treatment plans that may involve medications, procedures, physical therapy, or psychological therapies to help manage their patients' pain. To be effective in their role, Pain Management Specialists need a deep understanding of the human body, excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate complex medical concepts to patients.
Before becoming a Pain Management Specialist, a person may have roles such as a Registered Nurse, Anesthesiologist, or Physical Therapist. They must complete a medical degree, followed by a residency in a related field like anesthesiology or physical medicine and rehabilitation. To specialize in pain management, they then need to complete a fellowship program in pain management. Important certifications include a medical license and board certification in Pain Medicine through American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
