Orthopedic Surgeon Jobs in South Dakota

Orthopedic Surgeons are specialized physicians that diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and prevent diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Their expertise is vital in the physician industry, as they perform surgeries to address trauma, tumors, injuries, infections, and other conditions requiring surgical intervention. They also provide nonsurgical treatments like medication or physical therapy. Orthopedic Surgeons can further specialize in areas like sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics, or orthopedic oncology.

Important skills for Orthopedic Surgeons include excellent hand-eye coordination, physical stamina, decision-making abilities, and interpersonal skills. They must be board-certified in orthopedic surgery, which requires completion of medical school, a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery, and passing a comprehensive exam. Some surgeons may also complete additional training in a subspecialty area. Prior to becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon, a person may start as a medical student, then advance to a surgical resident, and finally to an orthopedic surgery fellow.
