Ask a Career Advisor: How Do I Hide My Job Search From My Employer?
With the Great Resignation, millions have quit their jobs or at least been inspired to seek greener pastures. If you’re currently employed, it’s wise to keep your job search confidential – especially if you're only casually checking out other opportunities. But how do you do that?
While you can always ask recruiters and hiring managers for confidentiality when you apply to jobs, there are more steps you can take to hide your job search from your employer until you’re ready to give notice. Certified Career Coach and Advisor Lori Cole shares her tips on running a confidential job search.
How to Keep Your Job Search Confidential
“First, don't use your work computer for any job search-related activities, like applying to jobs, attending video interviews, or updating your resume,” advised Cole. “This is the easiest way to ensure your boss will find out that you’re looking for a new job. You never know what’s being tracked or who might be glancing over your shoulder.”
Use your phone or other personal devices during breaks or after work when you’re back home to run your job search. This is the safest – and most respectful – option.
Be strategic about interviewing as well. “Try your best to schedule interviews during off hours when your absence likely won’t be questioned. For example, missing an important all-hands meeting will draw more attention to you than taking an off-site lunch break,” Cole added.
Managing Your Online Presence During a Confidential Job Search
When using career platforms and job boards, confirm that you have the right privacy settings in place. Avoid making your resume publicly available until you’re ready for anyone, including your boss, to find it.

“You should still keep your LinkedIn profile updated during a confidential job search. Focus on all the great things you’ve done to help your current employer succeed. This makes both you and your company look good!” said Cole. “Additionally, keep networking! Make connections and help others with their job search while keeping an ear out for openings that interest you.”
Can You Not Give Your Current Employer as a Reference?
When you’re asked for references, companies will likely request contact info for your current or most recent supervisors. If you’re running a confidential job search, this can get dicey.
“Be upfront with the hiring manager and let them know that you’re currently employed and would prefer to provide references at the offer stage. They should be understanding,” suggested Cole. “Alternatively, you could provide the names of other people you trust at your current company.”
As you apply for jobs, be mindful that word could get around if you’re in a tight-knit industry or location. Despite your request for confidentiality, your boss may find out anyway. “Depending on your workplace culture and relationship with your boss, this could be a good thing that leads to a constructive conversation about your job satisfaction,” said Cole. “Or the opposite could occur, and you’ll need to accelerate your job search. Be prepared for a variety of outcomes.”
